@ some of you on tumblr who are glad about all of the insanely bad weather texas is getting because of texas politics and shit
please shut the fuck up due to the following reasons :
- most of texas is in no way prepared to handle this much rain. the average rainfall in north texas for may is four inches, and we’ve gotten something like 17 inches (and it’s been storming here in dallas for the past hour, so that number is going to go up) so telling texans to suck it up because other parts of the world get worse flooding than this every day is just stupid????and???doesn’t make sense????
- just a couple of weeks ago, parts of texas were bone-dry because of the insane drought we’ve been in for the last five years, and now lands are completely overwhelmed by the water.
- yeah our politicians are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist pieces of shit. but there are also a lot of really great and not terrible people here, including lots of LGBTQA+ residents, all of whom really don’t want to drown
- speaking of drowning, did you know people have died due to this flooding? over 20 people have been reported dead and 13 are missing or dead.
- Houston is practically underwater. Schools are closed all across the area. Thousands of homes have been damaged and destroyed due to flooding. People are literally fucking stranded because of flooding on the roads and are drowning in their cars.
- austin isn’t doing that well either!
TLDR ;
To help, please consider donating to the Houston and Austin Red Crosses or the Central Texas relief fund. also please don’t be an asshole and realize that people of all backgrounds are being seriously affected by this weather thank you good bye have a nice day
For perspective:

Keep in mind too that along with people losing their lives, their homes, their belongings- there are so many people who have pain conditions and disabilities that are made worse by severe weather systems like this. Because it’s not JUST that it’s raining- it’s that storm systems are moving through and beyond, then more follow. 3 days of rain followed by one of clear skies followed by more storms means intensive pain flares for people with chronic conditions.
.
It makes getting around with mobility issues even more difficult. Texas is NOT necessarily the most easily accessible to navigate in a wheelchair, or with crutches or a cane- so having water suddenly EVERYWHERE makes that even more difficult.
.
You can laugh all you want at the “irony” of our legislature being dickwads about federal funds until something like this happens- but don’t forget we live in a state that has done AGGRESSIVE things to change districting and has been doing everything they can to affect voter turnout and access so that that same dickwad legislature remains in power- even if MOST of us don’t want them there.
.
The actual PEOPLE that live here deserve your compassion, not your jokes. We need HELP. We need RELIEF. And if you think our legislature cares enough to help us on their own- you definitely don’t understand the way this state works.
And fyi, world, saying that Texans “deserve this” because pf conservative politics is just as shitty as when morons like Pat Robertson or WBC rail about liberal areas/folks deserving their natural disasters. People are suffering. Lots of people. Shut up.
I was going to put this in the tags, but it’s too important to me to say passively:
Thank you. Thank you for this post. Need I explain how absolutely awful that “God has spoken” post is? How awful it makes me feel?
Texas isn’t some queer wasteland. Not everyone in Texas is homophobic. There are LGBT+ people in Texas. THERE ARE LGBT+ PEOPLE IN TEXAS. THERE ARE LGBT+ PEOPLE IN TEXAS.
But you know, reblog that post. Go ahead: Erase all the queer Texans. Joke about the people who get put down and kicked out daily because of their sexuality or gender identity. The people who aren’t protected, even by our families, or given rights. Go ahead and tell us that we deserve to lose our homes, that we deserve to drown. Go ahead and tell that to the family of Devine’s homecoming queen. Tell them that their daughter deserved to die because of the actions of a corrupt few. That’s what you’re telling us when you reblog that “God has spoken” post. You’re mocking the deaths of real actual people.
And that’s only the beginning: how about the people in poverty whose homes have been damaged beyond repair? They can’t afford to repair their homes, they can’t afford to live in a hotel until the damages are fixed. Oh, wait, they can’t just go to a hotel, because the hotels are damaged too. What about all the people who are already homeless (who are overwhelmingly LGBT+ and PoC) and have died of exposure, or drowned, or lost whatever shelter they could come up with due to the flooding? They obviously deserved it, right?
Our politicians don’t believe PoC, impoverished or LGBT+ people are people, and what you’re telling us by reblogging that post is that you don’t think we’re people, either. But go ahead: reblog that post.
